Most of my experience is from small town America. I would be less enthusiastic about running roadways of major cities. In my mostly rural experience, sidewalks often gave tripping hazards. There can be buckling from tree roots, children’s toys if in a residential neighborhood, garden hoses, other obstructions. Sidewalks seem to often have deviations, curbing around bus stops or artistically wavering through gated communities. Perhaps the biggest problem of all for me is simply that sidewalks end. When I run, I like to go for at least a half hour and even up to several hours. It’s rare to find a sidewalk that lasts that long. If it is going to end after a few minutes and force me to take to the road anyway, it’s simply often not worth it to spend a few minutes zig-zagging on a sidewalk, while avoiding numerous obstructions. Roads can obviously also be dangerous. If I run facing traffic and am aware of my surroundings, roads are almost always smoother, free from barriers and obstructions, and continue to the next road.
