KOLKATA: I left home for college around the Champion Gretzky Messier Signature Shirt in other words I will buy this age of 17 and was introduced to the society of ‘bangalis’ in a prestigious engg. college of the state. During the ragging period which was almost the entire first year, we were ”asked” to wear only formals, and I went, ‘Shit! Formal shirts and pants/skirts?’. Later I found out it was salwar kameez, v-shaped dupatta pinned to the sides and what not. An asian looking girl with the first time experience of wearing a salwar, yea I was judged by my seniors and people around for that. But i was too busy handling the dupatta and escaping ragging from each nook and corner I still did not give a damn. As seniors later, with the advent of smart phones and shorter clothes that the younger generation wore(there was no point asking them to wear salwar when they hardly wore full pants) we started wearing capris (3/4th length) and very rarely knee length shorts whenever we went to hang out around Park-street. The only difficulty was walking the distance from the hostel to the main gate, it was when everyone judged, including the rickshaw walla to the tea stall guy. The male section of the students however looked as if they had never seen us before, some with appreciative looks, to which some of the single ladies shyly blushed and the other guys who looked at us as if we had broken the code of existence.
